When I switch to 4HI in mud/snow, it feels like the t-case is popping out of 4wd. It will pull strong, but then it bangs and the rear end gets squirrely. It seems fine in 2WD. I just changed the fluid at 35k or 40k, and used the recommended fluid, and it didn't do it before. Any ideas...?

Does it actually shift into 4wd? If so, I don't think it would be the shift solenoid.

Also, what bangs? Is it the coming from the front end?

Check these things:

1. U-joints
2. Auto locking hubs (they sometimes dry up and break)

Hmmm... it very well could be then.

Check the u-joint on your front axle on the T-case end.

I don't know a lot about how 4x4 works but.... is your front diff gearing the same as the rear? I had different gearing for a while and got a loud bang when driving on pavement for a short distance. And which vehicle are you talking about?

The Ranger, and it's all stock, never did this until this winter and I've had the truck for almost 5 years. I'll pull the front shaft and see.
