My friend has a 1991 2.3 5 speed 4x2. The trans is stuck in second because he broke the shifter, but before we added clutch fluid it would get going just fine in second. Now when we let off the clutch it dies, but sometimes you dont even have to let off the clutch all the way. So far we bypassed the safety switch, refilled the clutch and thats all. We are trying to figure out why it stalls now. Any ideas?

I had a similar mishap with the stick shift busting off when the ball housing cracked off and the shifter pulled straight up. Good thing it was after i pulled into the work parking lot. just had to jam it back in and maneuver the tranny into the reverse and first to get it into parking spot.

As for the issue of it dieing, there should be two switches connected to the clutch, the one for the starter enable and the other one doesn't specify in the schematics to what it controls. When the clutch fluid was topped off, did the clutch fully release or feel spongy? Seems kind of odd that the engine isn't continuing to stay running, is he always starting off in 2nd? Fairly hard on the engine unless you spool it up or I could see it having some problems, anything wrong with first?

We can't get it out of second and the clutch feels fine. He was starting off in second before this happened.
