Found a good on paper analysis of how the Ranger compares to other mid size trucks in the segment. Wish the graph also listed towing and payload specs, but know the Ranger is class leading in that regard.

Toyota should be on everyones radar. Already they did a refresh to the current Tacoma, helping it to be stronger contender for the 2020's and beyond which makes you wonder what else might be in store.
They never make big moves to offer more, but just enough to keep competition at bay and of course competition it this segment is heating up to allow future changes.

From a technical standpoint, I feel like the Tacoma continues to fall behind rivals with every new generation. Its resale value and reliability only account for so much, especially when you are looking for a truck that's capable and fun to drive. Time will tell if the same old truck with slightly better tech can compete with brand new contenders.

If you think that's bad, Toyota wants to start downsizing engines. So instead of a V6 Tacoma it might be all 4 bangers :(
