I want to get some more power out of my little 2.5L on my 98 ranger 2wd reg cab. Set it up like a pre runner. Jack it up a couple inches and put some bigger tires on it, not too big, 32" max. I plan on making my own front bumper from scratch, made a bumper for a friend and it turned out pretty sick. My thoughts were: replace stock air box with a cone, underdrive pulley, throttle body spacer, and mess with the exhaust.

Any thoughts, comments, or constructive criticism?

throttle body spacer will do nothing really. first is first for performance... intake, exhaust, U/D pullies, and then a tuner.

Definitely go for the intake and exhaust first!

yup... for exhaust he general consensus on this site is Flowmaster rocks, Magnaflow blows... so get a flowmaster 40 series for that 2.5! either replace the muffler of go catback... gibson is real good with 4 banger ranger exhaust kits.

dont do exhaust first cuz it will do nothing... you cant push out the air you dont have yet so the intake must be first to get that air in there, theres still plenty of room in those pipes for the extra air to go. I reccomend the flowmaster super 44 for the two V6 engines but when it comes to the 4 banger i say the 40 series... the 40 series will make it much louder and the super 44 will enhance the true sound of the engine... so, since the 4 banger does not have much of a gurgle true sound like the 3.0 or the 4.0, you need the 40 series to create that gurgle...

would you agree BADINTEN?

"God is great, beer is good, and WE are crazy!!!" lol

and just a note... drive with the seafoam in the truck for a day or two, then start all of the tune up stuff.

Just a few questions before I go spending money..

-Does the engine have to be advanced in order to operate smoothly? -- I read the timing section in the haynes book and looked online and couldn't find anything on the subject.

-What could cause a backfire through the intake other than off timing or carbon build up? It rarely does it once I get up to temp. but I can't go anywhere while it's cold because it just backfires through the intake and dies when I apply throttle.

-I ran the diagnostic and it says ECT sensor and O2 sensor are bad. It says the coil packs are fucked too but I just bought new ones this summer. Whats up with that?

Last night I readjusted the timing and got it set perfectly on 0 degrees. Runs wayy smoother now. No more backfire. I also found that a plug wire was melted and shorting out across another wire. Replaced that. Probably why the computer said the coil pack was fubar. I traced the rest of the plugs from coil packs to corresponding cylinders and they're in order. It runs great now just a pain to get started now. I'm going to replace the two sensors and see how it goes. Thanks guys!
