2000 Ranger with 164,000, v-6, 3.0. What I originally thought was the power steering pump(swapped it out)turns out to be the A/C compressor. ??? It is screaming the minute I start it. A quick little goose and it settles down to a whine and small clunking. I'm guessing the bearings are shot

My question is: any good guesses as to when it will sieze up and fry the belt. I might be able to get it to a shop before that happens but I do not want to risk a daily drive to and from work.

Buy a belt for a non-ac car and put that on temporarily.

I don't own a 3.0 but have a '91 4.0. Here is a pic of the front after removing the ac;

I don't think it would have been in the way even if I left it in place. maybe yours will be similar.
