I'm having some starting problems with my 2003 2.3L Ranger. When I turn the key nothing seems to happen, all of the dash lights come on but it just won't engage the starter. I put a new starter in it and that didn't seem to help at all. The problem seems to be the worst when I try to start it...

Engine runs fine once it starts, but backfires badly when tryng to start cold. I think the backfire is making the engine turn backwards and breaking teeth off the starter gear. I'm now on starter number 3--any ideas on how to find the cause of backfiring?
